Floating Bodies

“I remember the Rhine coming down in flood and all the old city was substantially underwater. There was a monastery connected to one of the churches lying in the old city. A somewhat bizarre memory of those days… in the flood area the corpses of the monks which they had kept in concrete enclaves started floating out of the monastery along the streets… but these are early memories“

       Gunter Samson, 1998

These lines are from Talya Lubinsky's grandfather, Gunter Samson, who spoke of his childhood in Duisburg before his escape from Nazi Germany in 1936.

Floating Bodies is based on personal experience of the artist’s grandfather, but also deals with the history of Jewish immigration from Nazi-Germany to South Africa in the 1930s. With the installation shown at Iwalewahaus, Talya Lubinsky disrupts two often forcefully separated narratives: the persecution of European Jews and the stories of those who escaped, who would go on to inhabit different spaces, contexts and environments.

The installation also alludes to the fluidity of identity and the physical crossing of the seas by ships and boats. As a starting point it takes the natural power of the flood to unearth long-buried bodies and their stories. By mixing content and materiality Talya Lubinsky, who was born and raised in South Africa, opens and breaks up the violent, obscure past of history and puts it in a new poetic context. She creates links, by showing that the context is not limited to the past, but connected to current global events.
