The Ceramic Art of El Anatsui

Ozioma Onuzulike (University of Nigeria, Nsukka)

Although currently better known for his metal sculptures and installations made out of liquor bottle tops, Ghanaian-born artist El Anatsui has also produced a respectable body of works in the ceramic medium. His works in high-fired manganese body, entitled Broken Pots, created in Nsukka, south-eastern Nigeria, in the late 1970s, inaugurated a radical ceramic art aesthetic that shaped the course of modern and contemporary ceramic art in Nigeria.

This lecture will examine Anatsui’s context of practice, the formal and thematic trajectories of his ceramic art and how they intersect with other works in his large oeuvre.
