Did you know that Parsifal's brother Feirefiz was African?
In a lecture performance, Daniel Kojo Schrade will address the origin of the medieval Parsifal epic. Feirefiz, the hero's brother, plays a substantial role in the writing by Wolfram von Eschenbach. In the adaptation of Richard Wagner for his opera Parsifal (1882) however, all reminders of Feirefiz are wiped out and with it the premodern relations between Europe and Africa.
This evening, Iwalewahaus will also launch the book "Art of Wagnis – Christoph Schlingensiefs Crossing of Wagner and Africa". The publication focuses on works by Christoph Schlingensief in which Wagner and Africa are confronted in unfamiliar ways, like in Schlingensief's Parsifal staging (2004-2007).
